EWB Overseas Workshops

Delegates will be invited to attend 1 of 4 workshops focusing on EWB’s work overseas:

1. Water & Sanitation in Malawi with Heather Anderson, P.Eng. (South Studio 1)

After spending over 4 years as a Project Engineer with Stantec Consulting Ltd., Ms. Anderson took a leave of absence and accepted a 14 month overseas volunteer post with EWB/WaterAid in Malawi to work on Water and Sanitation projects. She will be recounting her experiences as a professional volunteer and exploring possible causes of and solutions to the large number of non-functioning water points in the region.

2. Sorghum Marketing in Zambia with Nina Lothian ( South Studio 2)

Prior to accepting an overseas volunteer position with EWB, Nina Lothian was a Project Manager at Syncrude Canada Ltd. Her volunteer work placed her in Zambia partnering with CARE International on a sorghum marketing project whose goal was to increase local farmers’ food security and income. Nina will be discussing her experiences with the project as well as the reality of leaving professional employment for overseas volunteering purposes.

3. Technology Adoption in Malawi with JohnPaul Portelli. (South Studio 3)

JohnPaul Portelli was a Maintenance Coordinator at Syncrude Canada Ltd before volunteering with EWB in Malawi. He was partnered with the Department of Science and Technology where his work focused on technology adoption to improve economic growth. JohnPaul will be discussing the various challenges working at a government level, trying to promote sustainable small businesses in the country as well as how this work better prepared him for his career in Canada.

4. “Beyond Miles Partnership” with Aeroplan (Garden Studio 3)

Through EWB’s “Beyond Miles Partnership” with Aeroplan, 24,000,000 miles have been donated to EWB - the equivalent of all annual flights for EWB long-term volunteers and most domestic travel needs. In the fall of 2008, Minh Josefsson and Carissa Vados, two Aeroplan employees, went to Zambia to see first hand EWB’s work on the ground with the goal of better understanding development, EWB and connecting this knowledge back to Aeroplan employees in Canada. Minh and Carissa were led by long-time EWBer, Jenn Dysart and all three will share their experiences through stories and pictures and provide perspective on the value of corporate partnerships.
